Assignment 1: WHO YOU ARE MATTERS by Richard Lin

Hello, my name is Richard Lin and I was born in New York City. My parents are from China, and after a few years in NYC, I returned to China for a little while to stay with my family there. I returned back to the United States when I was 5 years old and progressed through the educational years until I graduated and went to USC.

In terms of my goals, I want to pursue the intersection between technology and business. I understand that our society is progressing more technologically daily, and I want to contribute to that future by managing and creating new products and ideas to help advance the world. My plan is to learn and make mistakes early on, and learn everything when I first pursue my career goals, so I can be eventually successful long term.

Regarding the similarities between my parents and me, I guess one thing that we're alike in is that we're all Chinese. Jokes aside, I definitely am more similar to my dad than my mom, but we're similar in that we are hardworking and ambitious, and always try to look out for each other.

Regarding some differences, the first thing that comes to mind is that I am the first one in my family to attend college (this basically means that I am a knowledge God, and my parents are super jealous of me). In addition, my parents are very traditional compared to my perspective of the world and society, but definitely I grew up with more Westernized ideals than what my parents grew up with. I enjoy looking at at different perspectives, and I definitely do appreciate our different ideals which creates very thoughtful conversation.

In terms of my expectations, I would say that I am controlled by my own expectations and by my family. Obviously, I do want to be successful and try not to be in gambling debt at the age of 22 for my own well-being, but I also want to make my family proud and eventually flex on them with my Lamborghini Urus.

My biggest role model, outside of a family member, would be LeBron James, my glorious king. Lebron has been playing at an all-star level for the last 22 years, which is ironically the same age as me. For me, I see his progression and longevity as a true inspiration. In a generation in which trends and short-term gratification dominate the youth, I see Lebron's career as a true inspiration and motivates me to always keep working on my craft, and keep growing and learning as a person to be better daily.

A wild animal that I feel a deep connection with is a Lion. Lions are very fashionable and wear a natural fur coat around their neck, and this also protections them from predators as well, making them alpha and dominant creatures. In addition, a lion symbolizes very important virtues such as royalty, strength, courage, and align with my personal values.

In nature, there is one significant memory that I have of a plant. The plant is called "Poison Ivy" and during cross-country practice one day, I ran into a bunch of those plants. I then got poison ivy all over my body and all over my face, and it was the worst 2 weeks that I had to endure. On the bright side, I also got out of a few practices and competition meets during those 2 weeks.

  1. Nice Richard! I hope you great success in the technology field. Since I met you in BUAD 302, I never pegged you for a Capybara kind of guy but now I see the connection. You are indeed a "chiller" and are quite social. While I believe MJ has LeBron beat in GOAT status, I admire your connection to him.

  2. Hi, Richard! I think it's cool you want to contribute in the progressing technology and business fields, they're both very interesting and I'm sure opportunities will be plentiful. I also relate to the parents treating you as a knowledge god for being the first member in college, since I'm a cs major they basically treat me like IT. And as a former cross country runner, my condolences for the poison ivy.

  3. Hello Richard! I really enjoyed reading about your experience, especially the part about your understanding of modern technology. I also love the touches of humor here and there. As someone who shares a similar background with you, I can relate to many of the similarities and difference you have with your parents.
